66% of Brits support ban on niqab!
January 27th, 2010Most people in Britain hold a critical opinion on the (niqab) veils worn by some Muslim women, according to a poll by Angus Reid Public Opinion. 67 per cent of respondents say that garments that conceal a woman’s face represent an affront to British values, while 25 per cent disagree with this notion. However, 58 per cent of respondents believe the government should not be allowed to tell individuals what they can and cannot wear.
Angus Reid Global Monitor, 27 January 2010
Full poll here
Unfortunately, the apparently reassuring opposition to state interference didn’t prevent 66% of respondents backing a ban on the niqab in public places, 75% a ban in schools and universities and 85% a ban at airports.
Britain is an islamophobic society and this attitude is being pushed by the mainstream Labour and Conservative parties. Hardly a day goes by without politicians from either party attacking Islam and Muslims. Their real desire is clear they want Muslims to leave Islam and adopt their values. With parties like these who has to worry about the BNP?

I live and work in Kuwait, A Islam/Muslim country. I follow the rules of the land here, I wear long sleved tops and do not wear anything above my knee. Is the Kuwaiti goverment happy not to arrest me for wearing what I want and not judge me for eating port products and getting drunk? NO is the answer… When in Rome do as the Romans do… In the UK we have been more than accomadating in regards to all walks of lives. There are parts of the UK were people are not allowed to wear hoodies because of crime, no motorbike helmets in Banks and so on…. But should we allow woman wearing hijabs (sp) wear what they want where they want? Rules are rules….There is a time and place for everything.. Khalas..

The niqab is a non-issue really because so very few women wear it and unless they feel threatened by women then they aught to relax - they’re not ninja assassins (or are they?
). Some people see something they don’t understand and it looks a little weird to them then they dislike it and don’t want to see it - it’s a normal phenomenon in societies; it’s called closed-mindedness. I’m not a big fan of the niqab but I respect the right of a woman to choose to wear it (or not) and understand that for some of those women it is a religious duty with respect the their sect’s/group’s scholar’s interpretations. It doesn’t matter what country she is from or lives in, even if she lives in Rome, Italy.
