Word Meaning

Riyya

(رياء)
Grammar: word;Riyya' is to show off that you are a good Muslim or a devout believer in front of others just to look good in front of them while your intention is not to please Allah but instead to make yourself look better in the eyes of other people. It is a form of deceiving people and is not permitted in Islam. An example of riyya is when a person shows off that they've given a lot of money to charity in front of others and they have done this in order to gain the reputation of being a charitable person in the community. The teachings of the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) state that riyya is approaching idolatry as your niyyah, or intention, is for yourself and others and not for Allah who should be foremost in who we aim to please.
