Word Meaning

Sirat

(صراط)
Grammar: word;Literally, the sirat means path or road. Islamic teachings use the image of a path to represent the journey from ignorance to enlightenment or sin to piety. It teaches that one must stay on the straight path, follow the correct teachings of Islam and not sin. Sinning and other misguidances are shown as veering off the straight path and becoming misguided and losing one's way in life and not reaching the intended destination. The destination of the path is to God and heaven and not following the path set by God leads to hell.In Islamic theology the sirat also refers to the narrow bridge that crosses over the pits of hell and it must be crossed to enter heaven. Some pious people will easily be able to cross this bridge into heaven while others will find it slippery and treacherous but succeed in crossing it, while others will slip and fall into the fires of hell.

In the Quran, Allah (God) gives us a Surah (Chapter) to recite every day in our prayers. It is called Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter and it mentions the spiritual sirat.

[1.1] In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
[1.2] All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
[1.3] The Beneficent, the Merciful.
[1.4] Master of the Day of Judgement.
[1.5] Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help.
[1.6] Keep us on the right path.
[1.7] The path of those upon whom Thou hast bestowed favours. Not (the path) of those upon whom Thy wrath is brought down, nor of those who go astray.
